How to Use Avianca LifeMiles for Award Flights

Pam

One of the easiest transfer partners to use for award flights is Avianca LifeMiles. I have used them several times. Additionally, both Citi ThankYou Points,  Capital One Venture Miles, and American Express Membership Rewards transfer to Avianca so you have options. Before we talk about how to use Avianca LifeMiles for Award Flights, here are the cards that you might want to use to be able to do this:

Step One:

Sign up for a loyalty account on Avianca’s website. You can then hit the LifeMiles section at the top of the page. Scroll down that page until you see the part that says “redeem your miles on flights” and hit that. You will then come to a page where you will have to accept the cookies and change the language to English. This is how the page looks after that is done.

Step Two:

Fill in all the information about where you want to go. Sometimes it’s easier to build a trip by doing one passenger at a time and one-way trips and then adding from there. Let’s say I want to go from Denver to Maui, this is how it will look:

Step Three:

When you hit the blue area with the arrow, you will get dates to pick for your flights. Additionally, you may see blue dots on some dates which means that award flights are available. However, you may find flights on dates without blue dots also. (Not a perfect system, obviously!)

Step Four:

Select a date. Just to show you that other dates work, I picked the 21st (no blue dot there) and this came up. Note that there is a great, nonstop flight on that date. Also, note that in the top left-hand corner you can filter to just United Flights and other Star Alliance Flights.

Step Five:

Choose your desired flight. In this instance, there were others but they had stops along the way and this was the one that interested me the most. I can now book it for 22.5K and a little over $40 in surcharges. This is the same price that United charges but when I don’t have United miles or Chase Ultimate Rewards (or want to save them for something else) this is a great option!

Bottom Line

The ability to transfer partners is the reason we love our transferable point credit cards so much. Avianca LifeMiles is a huge player in booking to Europe or Hawaii for me and can be for you now that you know how to use Avianca LifeMiles for award flights. Nex we’ll show you some trips you can take by booking with LifeMiles!

I tried searching to Hawaii and it says they don’t fly there. Not sure if I am doing something wrong or what…

You may be looking from an airport that doesn’t fly from there. You need to find a United flight that flies to Hawaii. It is possible, that you would need to position to an airport that has a United flight to Hawaii.
