Friday Family Vacation to San Diego

Pam

Sun, beach, and waves? Can you beat that? Only if you can do it on points and miles AND you take your family to create some lasting memories. I still remember fondly being a child in San Diego with my parents and siblings! Such fun times that I thought it was surely the best vacation spot on earth. We are going to do a Friday Family vacation to San Diego today! Hear more about Southern California destinations on our podcast!

At the time of writing, these were the point redemptions needed. This is always subject to change.

Flights

So many ways to get to San Diego – let’s head to the beach from Houston today with our family of four.  I have United miles (or Chase Ultimate Rewards that I can transfer to United). Because I have school-age children, we want to go as soon as school lets out. I’ll check out United’s 30-day calendar for point prices in June because I know that flexibility is key in my getting a good rate.

I will definitely try and pick a 15K day for my outbound flight.

I can find a20K award redemption for my return flight of June 7. Remember, that I am paying more because it is summer time. Here are my totals:

I can get the following card, refer my spouse to it and have enough points to book these flights with some miles left over. As I said before, you can also use Ultimate Rewards as a transfer.

Hotel

I have some IHG points that I accumulated from a recent signup. IHG redemption stays are book 3 nights, get 1 free so I’d like to take advantage of that. I love La Jolla Beach so the Holiday Inn Express & Suites La Jolla Beach looks great for our stay (there are many more options). At only 47,000 points a night, one signup bonus from the following card would get you the four nights.  Note: Always read the reviews of hotels to decide where to stay. This hotel isn’t the newest but still has great reviews for the location.

Note that this comes with free breakfasts – saving more money!

Bottom Line

With only three credit card signups, a family can enjoy a vacation in San Diego. Get more IHG points if you’d like to stay longer! Again there is so many ways to make this trip happen. Send us ideas of how you’d book a Family Vacation to San Diego.

Hi, I am trying to plan this same location for spring break 4/1 thru 4/9. Seems expensive. I do have united miles plus points. Can you help how I can make my oop low?

    • Pam says:

Spring breaks, holidays, etc, will usually be more expensive. If you can look at the United calendar for that week, you may be able to change your flights to a day earlier or later and save money.
