Want to save about 5K each way on your United Award Flights? Consider booking Singapore Airlines for cheap United flights! Singapore and United are both part of the Star Alliance so you can use Singapore KrisFlyer Miles to book your United flight. We’ve talked before about using Turkish Airlines to book cheap flights to Hawaii and other places and this is easier because you can do it all online. You won’t get to Hawaii for 7.5k in economy, but you will get there cheaper.
The following transferable points transfer to Singapore Airlines:
Well, that makes it easy! They all transfer to Singapore. One very important caveat: Never, ever transfer until you find availability. Transfers are one-way transfers only. Once you transfer to Singapore, you can’t transfer them back to where they came. Now let’s check out some ways to use this option.
The first step is to find award saver availability for your trip on United. You can see that it says, “Exclusively available to you as a MileagePlus Premier and Cardmember”. You will only see this if you have signed up for the Mileage Plus Program and have a credit card with United. You could also just check Singapore Airlines to see what’s available. I want to go from Denver to Kona. Let’s see what I find.
Then I look at the Singapore Airline site to see what I find. Be sure and check Star Alliance under “show flights for”.
You can see that I can save 5K miles in this instance for a total of 10k on my roundtrip ticket. Oh yes, I am going to be booking this way from now on when I want to go to Hawaii in economy class. It doesn’t seem to work so well for business or is at least, much harder to find. I struck out on my several attempts for business class.
I fly to London often to visit my daughter who lives there and her cute family. This is the economy class flight I can find on the United website:
Here is a similar flight I can book on Singapore Airlines’s site for fewer miles. I would save 5K miles with a round-trip flight in economy to London. This works for other routes from the United States to many locations in Europe.
This seems to work easier when you book from the West Coast and when you can find a direct flight. Once you’ve found your flights you will need to transfer points/miles to your Singapore Airlines account. This transfer can take a few days so make sure there is not limited availability for the flight you are looking at. Once you see them in your account, you can go ahead and book your flights.
You can save award miles by booking a United Airlines award flight using Singapore Airlines miles. All of the transferable point currencies transfer to Singapore Airlines, making it easy to have plenty of points for those travels. Just know that it will take a few days for the transfers to occur and you might want to start small with this booking as you take the chance that the flights aren’t there when you go to book. Having said that, many people have great luck and save on their award redemptions by using Singapore Airlines for cheap United flights. Please let us know what flights you book this way!
