Why I Keep My IHG Credit Card Year After Year

If you want to add a hotel card to your wallet to get free nights, consider the Chase IHG Credit Card. This is a credit card I keep year after year. In case you aren’t familiar with what hotels are available through IHG, here is a partial list:

  • Holiday Inns
  • Crowne Plaza
  • Staybridge Suites
  • Kimpton
  • InterContinental Hotels (my favorite redemption)

Currently, the IHG credit card has a limited time, an increased signup offer of 140,000 points after spending $3,000 in 3 months, AND a WAIVED annual fee. That is the best bonus ever on this card! Unfortunately, I don’t have a date for when this offer expires.

You also get a free night (up to 40,000 points) each year on your cardmember anniversary. This is a Chase card so it falls under the 5/24 rule (if you have opened more than 5 cards in 24 months across any bank then Chase will not approve you for any more of their cards).

The annual anniversary night alone is enough for me to keep this card year after year, but there are additional benefits that make it even more valuable to me. Having the IHG credit card gets me platinum status so I can get an upgraded room when available.

When I traveled to Vietnam, I booked two nights at the InterContinental Hanoi for 25,000 points a night. My platinum status got us upgraded to a beautiful room that overlooked the water.

Another reason I keep this card is that it comes with the fourth night free on award bookings! For example, it would normally cost 140,000 points to book four nights at the InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort. As a cardholder I get the 4th night free, bringing my total down to 105,000 points! Just by signing up, you can potentially get four free nights with points to spare! Another benefit of this card is that also comes with a statement credit for TSA Precheck or Global Entry!

Where I booked my free stay for this year:

InterContinental Dubai Festival City

This is no longer an option for the free night, it cost 50,000 points a night.

Some places I might use my free night at in the future:

InterContinental Fiji- 40,000 points a night

InterContinental Presidente Cancun Resort- 35,000 points a night

You won’t find an IHG hotel that goes for 40,000 points a night for under $89. This alone makes this card a keeper, in my opinion. Add in the platinum status, 4th night free when booking with points, and various hotel options, and I am more than sold!
